Those Villains You Love to Hate

Oh, yeah, I have love to hate many of villains. As a writer though, it’s real hard to stick around in their evil and mangled heads long enough to write them, but when I do… I expose a part of my imagination that sometimes even scares me. Makes me wonder how some of the great authors of horror and the most evilest villains sleep at night.

PICK YOUR TYPE

Evil to the core and on the edge of madness
These villains create reasoning within their mind for their evil deeds. You don’t like these guys because you know they are evil, and when you conjure them up – they ain’t pretty, not one single little bit.

Justifiably Evil Villain
Oh, these villains were victims themselves, but now they are hunters, killers, and sadistically flawed because of their past.

Seductively Evil Villain
I and many women love these. You know, the vampires, the gorgeous guy that oh, just happens to get a sick pleasure out of killing people. The charming, seductive, alluring, charismatic villain that makes you want to love him, but you know its just sooo sooo wrong. Why? Because he or she wants to … kill with know apparent reason. And they use all of that charm, things that we equate to good to do it.

MY FAV VILLIANS
The Vampire Lestat (or any handsome sexy Vamp), Eric in True Blood, Freddie Kruger, Hannibal Lector, Mr. Sinister, Bullseye, and The Joker…come on, share yours. It’s the season for villains.

SO HERE's A BOOK, a blast from my reading past, WITH A VILLIAN YOU'LL LOVE as much as hate

Believe it or not, I read this when I was 15yrs old :-D

  1. Great post. Yep, we love those villains. I just did a week's workshop at the Muse Online Conference on Villains. It was so much fun. :)

  2. Awesome post!

I can only think of one example of a villain I love. There was ONE Russian baddie in the Alex Rider series. I don't remember what his name was, but he always amused me whenever he popped up hehe.

  3. With you on Eric (TB). Disney has had tons of great ones over the years. Jafar/Aladdin, Gaston/Beauty and the Beast, Ursula/Little Mermaid, etc.

Some of my favorites are Snape/Harry Potter and Magneto from the X-Men.

  4. I <3 villains. But you know what would be REALLY fun (and something I've always wanted to do)? Writing a story from the villain's perspective. :D

  5. Oh Becca! That would be so awesome, I'd have to unleash my inner 'meanie' to do it. When you write it, can I read yours?

  6. What's not to love, right? And Anne Rice carries on the villainous tradition so well.

We are definitely thinking along the same lines, LM. We need to hook up and actually PLAN a connected post sometime. :-)

  7. I'm hard pressed not to love my own "Emily" from "Dying Light", who is so dynamic, in my humble opinion, that she warrants a prequel all her own.

Outside those lines, my favorite villain is Big Brother! I hate him as much as Winston Smith does, but I will never think 2+2=5.

  8. Oh I LOVE a good villain. In addition to Eric and Lestat, I'll add Damon from Vampire Diaries. Voldemort too, though certainly not as sexy!

  9. Most of my villains have something to justify their evil, and then there are those are just evil because they enjoy it.

My favorite villain is a woman, the Ilse Witch created by Terry Brooks. I remember hearing my mother speak of how "power corrupts and how using a lesser magic saved his sister". I asked if I could read the book, but mother said "You're too young" and gave me "Pawn of Prophecy" the first book of the Belgariad series.

I did read a little of a book with the Ilse Witch while mum was away, but decided agains't reading more. I wanted to read the books that came earlier.

When I did get to her my hands trembled from exitement. It was worth the wait, she was cruel, powerful, enigmatic, cunning and determined to kill my favorite druid.
